Probably just going for whatever is the best rated (based on part by recommendations here, of course) and price is limited to maybe $150 or so. None seem to really freeze the ice cream to a hard state, so settling for soft serve is also fine (or the option to freeze more is fine).

Depends on who is going to use it. We have a traditional ice cream maker (electric), where you put ice and salt around the to-be-ice-cream container and then let it run.

But for kids, I'd recommend a Donvier device. You freeze an aluminum container, put the ingredients inside, then turn a handle a relatively few number of times, and you've got ice cream.
One example:

And they aren't too bad for adult use . . .

There are others which work the same way, such as this automatic Cuisinart:

And I usually check Consumer Search when shopping for something like this. They aggregate other reviews. Usually not my only source, but often helpful.

Good luck.

I make ice cream in this https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003KYSLMW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

It is soft serve to start with. After being in the freezer it hardens up. I use full fat coconut milk but I'd expect cow's milk to act similarly. Same results when making sorbet.

Home made ice cream. Perfect for Listeria monocytogenes.

Buzzkill! I'm never going to Buck's for a party.

Explain. Even the ice cream manufacturers were hard pressed to figure out how it got into their plant.

If you have a Kitchenaide stand mixer and don’t need to make a lot of different product, get the kit with the freezer bowl and dasher attachment. Works great, and makes a good 1.5+ quarts at a time. That’s what I generally use, and they are less than $100.

When I’m in full production mode, I use a Cuisinart ice cream maker with integrated compressor. That allows me to make multiple batches in a day without having to wait for the freezer bowl to solidify again (supposed to wait 24 hours before using again). The Cuisinart is $200+, so it depends on your needs.

Regardless of what you use, you will not find a “hard state” maker. Even professional machines come out as soft serve and are put in the freezer to fully harden.

I have the Cuisinart. My youngest daughter wanted to experiment with different flavors. It’s difficult to match the consistency and flavor of store bought ice cream. After a few attempts she lost interest.
