Unscientific observation of Autumn '17 in the metro Detroit area... - DP - 12-05-2017
So this has been a very strange Autumn as the color has been glaringly lacking. My opinion is that we had a very warm and dry start to the season. The colors were progressing slowly as the combination of warmth and lack of rain had the trees in no hurry to get on with it. Then, we got slammed with some very cold air which froze the leaves and shocked them to the point where they just lost any color and withered.
My proof for my argument: Here is an image of part of our Japanese Maple which usually turns an even more rich red before the leaves fall. This year, they are still on the tree and are all withered with no color, even into the first week of December, as if they are frozen to the tree. But, you can also see another shrub behind it with some color still:
The Wisteria usually turns a yellow-green before falling but, like the Maple, the leaves turned to a mud color and haven't fallen:
Here's one of the Cleveland Select pears. They usually turn a rich red and gold but now they are a greenish-yellow hue mixed with some leaves that are curled and black. Plus, there are still a lot of leaves left on the pears.
Looks like all will change big time as a frigid Polar air mass is moving in (I actually did get my snow blower up and running today). Maybe I'll be showing some snow pix soon!

Same here in Seattle. The leaves on one trunk of our vine maple look just like your picture

subdued colors and lack of colors here, too. some have blamed on ht unusual warm weather
maple leaves mostly just dropped off, oaks mostly just turned brown and my cleveland select is a dull mustard color.
Not sure about the bartlett pear tree as I came back from vacation to pick the pears and the deer beat me to them. Tree was stripped clean. Dunno if they also ate the leaves or they fell off and blew away.

I can't help with an answer. We had a typical fall albeit later than usual and the leaves have been gone for awhile.

Here in Nor Cal we have only had a tiny bit of rain weeks ago (and none in the next 10+ days) and its confusing the trees I think...
still TONs of leaves on my oaks, lots still green, but similar to yours there are a lot of just brown too.
