The Santa Paula fire. Firefighters are trying to save the city of Ventura. It was moving at 100 yards per second!

“The prospects for containment are not good,” Lorenzen said in a news conference, adding that there was no possibility of using aircraft at night to help contain the blaze. “Really, Mother Nature’s going to decide if we have the ability to put it out.”

So tough to see, and is unexpected this time of year. No rain in the forecast for a week or more. At least the wind speeds are supposed to drop off with a slow increase in humidity.

It won't be total devastation like the Santa Rosa fire but many homes and apartment buildings have burned and it's going to be a windy day. The city runs up the foothills, most of which are still undeveloped but everybody does a good job with brush control so there isn't as much fuel as in Santa Rosa. I'm hoping the fires already burned out much of the hillsides so it can't come roaring back a second time. Unfortunately, there are several barrancas, like dry creek beds, that start up in the hills as canyons and cross the city to reach the sea. They are full of trees, especially Eucalyptus. The neighborhoods below the foothills that have been impacted are along barrancas, so I'm assuming it was that, not flying embers, that caused those fires.
We left last night at 1:30am. Voluntary evacuation was 4am, mandatory 10:30 am.
A major transmission line was destroyed so the area is without power, may be for a few days. The entire city of Ventura is just now under a Boil Water advisory.
