Russian Plane Loses Gold Bars Worth $378 M After Door Breaks - GGD - 03-15-2018

I'm sure the count will come up short.

A plane laden with tonnes of gold-silver alloy was taking off from Yakutsk airport in Siberia when a loading hatch broke off.

Some 200 bars, each weighing about 20kg (44 pounds), were then scattered across the runway.

The local YakutiaMedia news website cited witnesses as saying that they spotted gold bars, as well as diamonds and bars of platinum across the runway.

Police arrived to the scene and cordoned off the area surrounding the runway, YakutiaMedia reported.

At least 172 bars of gold weighing 3.4 tons have been recovered from the area, an Interior Ministry source told the state-run TASS news agency.

The Mash news Telegram channel calculated the value of the gold to be 21.6 billion rubles ($378 million).

Much of that gold is now part of the runway.

People don't realize how dense gold is. When you see thieves moving pallets full of gold in the movies it's so misleading that it's almost...criminal. A standard gold bar is about 12.5kg (27.5 lbs). They're shipped 40 to a pallet, totaling 500kg (1100 lbs). That isn't a trivial amount of weight to move around. Yeah, it's easy with a forklift, but then you have to put it in/on something to move it.

The other issue is that a gold bar is slippery. Gold has a "slickness" to it. My dad was a bank VP, and on a vault tour, we were told if we could pick up, and HOLD a gold bar without dropping it, we could keep it. Dad wouldn't let is try. He was afraid we would crush a foot.
