Time Machine backup failed. Why? - space-time - 03-15-2018

I back up to a Synology NAS box.

Yesterday evening I got this message. I restarted MacBook Pro. I guess I can try to restart NAS next? it worked fine for several months since I set it up. This is the first time I have this issue.

Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “SynologyNAS”.

The backup disk image “/Volumes/TimeMachine/MacBookPro13 (2).sparsebundle” is already in use.

Latest successful backup: Yesterday, 3:13 PM

Happens when there's a network-interruption during a backup and often corrupts the target image.

Yes, reboot the NAS to clear the "busy" flag on the image.

Are you on High Sierra? Just a long shot---any recent OS updates?

Thanks again. I restarted NAS and it works fine now.

No, I am not on High Sierra. This machine is still on 10.9.5

Yes, reboot the NAS to clear the "busy" flag on the image.

Follow Up Question.

Is the target image still corrupted? Should I worry about that?

What happens if my MBP is backing up (via WiFi) to NAS and I close the lid, MBP goes to sleep. Does NAS close the target image? or it stays open until I wake up the MBP?

Maybe the backup disk thought it was saving you from joining Scientology........8-)

If your NAS permits you to mount the backup vol over the LAN then you can use the Disk Utility to verify the image file.

It's likely to be marked busy until the MBP is woken and if network operations are resumed then the Mac should gracefully unmount the image. But lots of stuff could mess that up.

Network Time Machine backups are convenient, but fragile and less useful than backing up to an external hard drive.

Thanks doc.

here is what NAS looks like. Why is that (2) there? I do not have another machine with this name.
