Anyone have a suggestions for how to minimize pain? Does taking a tranquilizer help? Will I be able to drive the next morning? Is there a type of sedation I can ask for?

Re-read the thread you just posted. Should not be a huge pain. IF you are in decent health, then driving should not be a problem. ASK your DOCTOR!

They'll give you a shot (or two) of local anesthetic with a small needle, before going in w/ the big bore needle for the biopsy. Just don't look, and you should be fine. If you're squeamish, a tranq would probably help. Probably not worth the hassle of any sort of major sedation. Good luck.

ASK your DOCTOR!

This. Especially if you're considering self-medication.

Donated. I think it's basically the same procedure. They're going in on the hip/butt?

They gave me liquid Valium if I recall correctly. Later, I found out that most places put you under general for this sort of thing.

Hurt for a day or so and then just a bit of soreness and the occasional mild shooting pain for the next few days when I shifted my weight. Yes, I could drive the next day. Was easily tired for a few days after.

I've heard some people say that they think most of the pain comes from expectation and tensing up, so going with general anesthesia leads to a quicker and less painful recovery.

From many hospital experiences: The key to a smooth procedure and successful recovery with the least drama and scarring is to never let a resident go anywhere near you.

I will join the chorus of Ask Your Doctor.

My bone marrow biopsy was done in the doctor's office with just some local anesthesia. I was able to drive home, had some soreness. It did take some energy out of me...

I foolishly had a prostate biopsy a few days later, that was just too much for one week.
