Price Check: MacBook Pro mid-2012 i7 - TLB - 05-15-2018
I'm being offered a 13.3" MacBook Pro 9,2 2.9 i7 750GB HD USB3 + TB. Is this still a viable machine? What is a fair price; I was thinking around $400-500? This will replace a 2009 MacBook for me so it is an upgrade.

That's a very fine machine. I have the 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB Ram, 750 GB spin drive, and optical drive. Just because it's a mid 2012 machine doesn't mean it's not fast, plus the last laptop you can upgrade the drive and memory. It will run High Sierra, though I think Sierra is the sweet spot for now given HS many little problems. What's it worth? Depends on Condition -- I wouldn't sell mine for $500...

That is the pinnicle of MBP's in my opinion. The last machine that can upgraded, runs fast enough for even the above average user, built solid. The mid-2012 was only discontinued in late 2016, so should be Apple supported until 2021. Drop a SSD drive in, maybe some ram (8gb is plenty with a SSD), and you will have a great machine.
Currently the i5 version routinely sells for $750-$850, add small amount for the i7.

Prices on eBay indicate your $400-$500 thought to be spot on.

I have one. Very zippy with a SSD in there. Still running Mavs on that one for the sake of iTunes 12. Doubt I’ll ever go beyond Sierra with it.

A bit overstated in mine. But I agree with the rest. Solid build, and fast enough for everyone.
memory and drive are "meh" for me.
But you prob want to figure in another $150 for a 500 GB SSD.

I have this with a 2.9 i7 and 8GB RAM. I replaced the SuperDrive with a 256GB SSD. I could buy a new computer easily enough and work would reimburse me $1000 of the cost. I don’t see the need to do so, however. After almost 6 years, this one is chugging along great.

$400 is a bargain, but I would still think about it at $500 IFFFF it is in great shape, the DVD drive works and the battery was original apple with 85%+ capacity. I can put $150 into that machine and sell it for $900.
