Stupid airport extreme question - Ombligo - 06-29-2018

My mom has Spectrum internet but has never used it (it was cheaper to get the package than just cable). I'll be visiting her for a week. She has no idea if it has a wireless signal or not. On the assumption it does not, can I just take my airport extreme, plug into her modem and go online, or will I need to change any settings?

I'm pretty sure I can, but just don't need any surprises.

.....it should work but there is a chance, if she never used the internet feature, that it may be 'locked' [ not sure if that meant the modem they gave me was 'locked' ]..........when I got Spectrum, I had to call them....couldn't figure why the internet wouldn't work with Apple Extreme but when I called them , they said it was 'locked'......and they had to 'unlock' it........perhaps it was just because my service was 'new' but be prepared to call them, in case......

The only thing you will have to do is re-cyle the modem (power off-15 sec-power on).

If her modem does have a built-in router, the username and password is probably on the "plate" somewhere.

If she has cable + internet, it may be possible (as Newt mention) that the internet modem was never activated (although the tech should have activated it during the install). If she has cable + internet +phone (VOIP), then most likely the internet modem is activated and ready to do. Whether it has WiFi or not it depends on the model. But you should take your own router (Airport extreme) and don't forget the CAT5 cable.

'Unlocking' must be similar to 'provisioning.'

You should give her provider a call to check that the internet is "on" before you go over. My internet defaulted off for me at some point when I was away, and getting it turned "on" took a four or five hours with me twiddling my thumbs.
