In the afternoon. With peak sun.
Last year I didn't install it and didn't need it. I was considering the same this year but changed my mind when I looked at the forecast and saw at least a solid week of high heat and humidity.
After I put it in, the heat index outside hit 111F. X(
(Oh, in case it's not obvious, I'm talking about a window unit. I also have a portable but never use it.)

Sounds like you had a pretty good incentive. I put in our window units (five of them) a few weeks ago. A couple of them are heavy enough to warrant having help. Four are on the second floor and they would do some damage if they fell.

Did you test it out? Murphy's law states that after going through all that, the condenser is on the fritz.

Same with us. We put it in the window when it's an emergency. This year, we found that our unit is way too narrow for the window so it requires building a bracket... we did okay last night without AC even though the heat index was 100 yesterday and will be today. Strategic window opening, fans, and showering.
There have been many years when we did not install it at all.

Was out too doing yard work but drank lots of water, took lots of breaks, and there was a bit of wind so really, it wasn't too bad. We had 95º with a dewpoint of 73º. Today will be a repeat but I don't have as much to do.
It still beats the hell out of ice and snow, howling North winds and a wind chill of 0º...

Too many years we haven't needed the window AC and usually wait until sleeping at night gets rough for those short periods where we have needed it. So we pretty much do the same; last minute.
Supposed to be 93ºF today, 67% humidity and 73º dew point, but then just 85ºF highs for the rest of the week. I've popped it in the window in the middle of the night before. The window sill is about forehead level so not too difficult.

Istead of removing it, how about covering it for when you don't need it? I'm looking at a week of triple figure heat PLUS humidity...we use it pretty much from March to October!
