Audio or text from Fresh Air ... no spoilers except to say it's well worth your time if curious about this bank from hearing about it because of Trump's connection. He's only part of the bank's problems.
But if you want to know why they lent to him when no one else would, I think that's simply answered: they wanted to make a splash, by finding a splashy client.

I'm not sure whether Deutsche Bank is more worried about the president or their own malfeasance.... what a mess!!
