2019 MBP teardown - ka jowct - 05-26-2019

“…the fundamental problem with this laptop remains—if the slightest thing ever goes wrong, you’ll be replacing half the machine. Even if the keyboard is perfect this time, you’re taking a gamble on everything else. Our advice? Save your money.?
?
With that, you can probably guess where this laptop lands on the repairability scale…?”

Yet another device I will never own.

If you don't mind inhaling nasty fuming carcinogens, third party battery kits are available. You just need to dissolve the glue with a harsh solvent and scrape off the explosive Lithium battery. No worries for a good 3-4 years.

Bummer. I was hoping the changes to the latest MBA for the battery would at least carry forward.

Well from a DIY "fix it" site I would expect no less a verdict.

They are just rating the difficulty of repair. Are you thinking that they are up to something else?

Absolutely not.

But its the only dynamic they rate. Their recommendation to "save your money" is only based on its DIY score.

Theres no mention of OS, speed, price, quality, etc.

And its not really news, MBPs have been this way for years...

I didn't pay attention, what were the latest MBA battery changes?

Uses stretchy adhesives rather than glue, and many aspects of the MBA can be fixed with the right tools.

That’s kind of their point: that even though the keyboard problem MAY have been fixed, everything else is still the same. Fortunately, I don’t need to consider one of these laptops, but if I needed one, I would not be happy about what they are offering. These are incredibly expensive throwaways.

That's the way I feel about them-both incredibly expensive and not worth repairing. I tossed a C2D Aluminum 13" and an I5 that needed a keyboard and battery. Meanwhile I have an old white MacBook that keeps on chugging along with it's 8 GB of ram and SSD.

I'm back to Thinkpads mostly-I think they are ALL throwaways now.
