My Greenland theory - gabester - 08-23-2019

There are many things at play with the prominence of Greenland in the news lately.
First, there's the obvious, devastating, accelerating signs of climate change.
Second, there's the 45th President's need to distract from other, more nefarious things with something seemingly ridiculous.
Third, there's a little bit of mass psychology at play - with an impending recession, talk of "green" counters the fear of "red ink."
Fourth, US already has a significant military presence on the island.
Fifth, there's the wag-the-dog playbook and maximizing chaos.

I think this administration will authorize a Greneda-style invasion of Greenland. It will sow maximum discord within Western European allies, but would not be objectionable to our global foes like Russia or China the way getting militarily involved with Iran or Venezuela or Syria would. It gets the failing despot his war and likely military victory with minimal consequences for him and the appearance lots of land to parcel out to the loyal base of know-nothing. It would serve the abuser's purpose to further isolate the United States from trade partners and NATO.

Expect this around October 31st of this year when the Hard Brexit will already have the world in turmoil...

I hope I'm wrong. This forum is always good and pointing out the flaws, please do so.

He’d need something to “defend.” And where’s the existing bad guy in Greenland? Ya gotta have that fake chart showing WMD or that blurry video showing Iranians and bombs against ships to drum up the expected TV audience.

Our ambassador to Denmark is a chiropractor and former soap opera and B-movie actress. She’ll figure it all out.

Lots of room for migrant detention centers.

Re: My Greenland theory - mrbigstuff - 08-23-2019

that would be the most hilarious thing since Monty Python showed up on fake horses!

I do think you are incorrect on that last point, but correct on the others; it's meant as a distraction, as are so many other things. It also plays into his narrative of being a "dealmaker." hahahaha.

Normally, I would roll my eyes at your post like I did concerning all the Jade Helm conspiracy theorists.

But now I just give it half an eye roll.

Buying Greenland was the idea of the idiot senator from Arkansas, Tom Cotton.

Was Trump's offer better than Harry Truman's?

At least Truman made an offer; Trump never got the chance.

No, the Danes never warmed to either offer. The difference was that the Truman administration talked about it with the Danes in secret and so when it was rejected it was no big deal. If Trump had kept his interest in buying Greenland on the down-low, the rejection from the Danes would have also been secret and Trump's fragile ego wouldn't have been hurt.

Re: My Greenland theory - Sarcany - 08-23-2019

It's made it to the mainstream news: This was all about keeping rust-brain from doing more damage when his ego got bruised.

Obama was scheduled to visit Denmark right after Cheeto's visit and the Danes love Obama. He's getting a parade and by all accounts the crowds are going to set records.

The only records Cheeto was going to break were the size of the protests.

So, his advisors started pushing the idea of buying Greenland on him as a way to ease him out of what would surely be a sh!tstorm of crybaby blabbing and rash decisions following that embarrassment. They even talked it up on Faux News to make it look like a real thing.

All to give Cheeto an excuse to back out before he was shown up by an accomplished black man who is adored around the world.

...

Per the Washington Post:

Several things are immediately striking about this episode. First, it’s a measure of how low we’ve all sunk that, in trying to explain why the president of the United States is making a consequential decision involving an official state visit, we’re forced to choose between two competing rationales that have nothing whatsoever to do with international diplomatic considerations or our national interest.

Notably, the official reason for the cancellation is nearly as saturated in narcissism and megalomania as the “less” flattering Obama-oriented explanation is: Trump is either angry that Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is not taking his suggestion seriously, or he’s embarrassed by it — or both.
