ARLINGTON, VA — An elderly Arlington resident was able to survive five days on a diet of nothing but Coca-Cola after he fell in his Williamsburg neighborhood home and was unable to get up, according to a report. The man fell in his kitchen and was able to drink the soda because it was within arm's reach.

According to ARLnow, the man was discovered after his mail carrier noticed on Aug. 2 the man's door was open and his mail was unmoved. A neighbor called the police, who discovered the man on the kitchen floor of his home in the 3000 block of North Trinidad Street.

he probably could have survived without anything for 5 days.

I'm assuming he couldn't make it to the toilet either, so unless it was hot enough to sweat it out, he was probably found in a puddle of processed coca-cola.

I seriously doubt that. 5 days with no liquids of any kind would probably have killed him, especially as he was "elderly".

When we were doing the walkthough for our house after we bought it (15 years ago), an ambulance pulled up across the street. We found out later that the woman who lived there had fallen, and her niece hadn't heard from her for a few days and came by to check on her. She was extremely dehydrated and died the next day at the hospital.

Agreed.

Sure there are exceptions to every rule, but he's lucky he had soda close by, and that his carrier saw the open door and pile of mail.

The survival rules of 3:
- no shelter for 3 hrs (based upon weather conditions and proper/improper clothing of course)
- no water for 3 days
- no food for 3 weeks
