2018 Mini / USB Follow Up - August West - 01-01-2020

I inquired about extending several usb drives to my 2018 Mac mini and got helpful advice from several people. Thank you very much for that. On the spur of the moment, I picked up the Anker 10 port 60w powered hub, because it was one day amazon delivery. I hooked up several drives today, and it seems fairly successful. The drives kept their initial speed as I added more, and all appear well powered and functional.

2 SSD
4 Spinner

2 of the disks contain 2 partitions, one SSD and one HD. Macintosh HD is the internal system disk.

Mainly movies, concert & studio recordings I've done over many years. I've been promising myself to get them all organized for about a decade now.

It appears the Anker Hub does not align the drives very well.

Planning on buying a massive 10TB+ drive to consolidate a few 1 TB drives. Then erase and give the old drive to Family members and tell them to back their sh*t up!

Have done this many a time as I upgraded, for both family & friends.

Had an old work friend call me out of the blue (only ever calls when there's a problem with his Mac); his Mac was hosed; it involved his kid deleting a bunch of critical files, both documents and system -- as in, after he restarted, he couldn't boot into the system. I forget the specifics. I told him the best thing to do was to boot into Recovery, run Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and restore from his Time Machine backup.

Silence on the other end. "What's Time Machine?"

I could really just end it there, but I reminded him that 5 years or so before he had bought an older external drive from me and I had walked him through setting it up as a Time Machine drive.

"Oh, I have that. It's still in the box on the shelf."

I offered a few possibilities (including a clean system reinstall, but said that wouldn't bring back stuff from the documents folder), and I stopped answering his calls and emails after that.

I no longer offer tech support for friends for this exact same reason.

only immediate family.
