Rant: Buying mens underwear should NOT be this hard! - Paul F. - 01-13-2020

Look, I fully understand that womens underwear (so I'm told) is a giant hassle to get "right". Sizes, builds, make, model, color... all that jazz.

But since when did MEN'S underwear become such a giant hassle?

So, on my "to-do" list for yesterday was "buy underwear"... time to replace some that didn't survive a too-hot dryer run (the elastic is no longer elastic).

So, I happened to be at Target... I figure, they have a menswear section, right? Well, shirts, pants, sweats, jackets, even shorts (in January....).. THOSE I can get. The racks labeled "T-shirts" and "Underwear" is empty. Not "understocked". Empty. Nada. Zip. Zero.

OK, fine... so I head for my next stop. Walmart for kitchen "flour sack" tea towels. They're great for straining cheese, etc. A tighter weave than cheesecloth (especially the garbage they sell now)... THEY have underwear, right?

Well, yeah, they DO... in a locked case with the t-shirts and socks. Yup. Have to buzz for an employee. OK, no problem... short wait, nice lady shows up, and I point to what I need. One package of el-cheapo tighty-whiteys, please.

But that's not the end of it. They have to WALK ME ALL THE WAY THROUGH CHECK OUT!
Yeah, apparently, theft of mens underwear and socks is so out of control that they not only lock 'em up, but put a security guard on you until you're to the actual checker (or self checkout, under the watchful eye of the duty sergeant...).

Seriously? And these folks WONDER why people just order stuff on Amazon?

OK... we now return you to your day...

You know you are shopping in the ‘hood when they secure the undies. Geesh...

Still, changing their underwear may be step up for that crowd.

I was at the local Dollar Store a few months ago getting some household items and a few things for my elderly Pop. He needed some underwear so I grabbed a pack from the display just a few feet from the checkout stand. The clerk grabbed the underwear and proceeded to remove the security tag. I was somewhat astonished and asked her if people were stealing underwear. She said it was one of the most shoplifted items in the store.

I'm still somewhat astonished by that statement.

Mens underwear is one of the most stolen items, particularly with higher end brands. It might have something to do with the fact that it can easily be concealed and the unit price tends to be high.

Yeah.... my workplace is in an area that went downhill FAST in this century... inner ring suburb that white flighted.... There used to be a mall. It is now an Amazon "fulfillment center". There used to be a discount store near the factory. They went out of business, and a KMart moved in. We knew it was going to be bad when EVERY SINGLE SHELF was locked up. Staff walked around with keys and had to unlock everything. They lasted a year.

It's a sign of a local economy that is helpless...

It has nothing to do with underwear, it just seems that Walmart has recently gone totally insane, making it virtually impossible to shop for certain products there.

I think VIN number is required too.

I can answer at least part of why they keep the underwear under lock & key: Nowadays people will open at least one bag of every type of underwear available and pull out a pair to, one assumes, feel them and to make sure that what the manufacturer calls a "large" really is large, then they'll put that bag back on the shelf, usually without even putting the pair they inspected back into it. Adding insult to injury, they won't buy the bag they opened to inspect and will instead grab a fresh, unopened bag of the same ones to take to the checkout. As you might imagine, this leads to HUGE losses because opened bags of underwear can't be sold as "new" if they are even sold at all.

The worst and most frustrating experience of my entire retail career was working in the section that included socks and underwear. If you ever want to lose all respect for your fellow man and see first-hand what sort of selfish, entitled, inconsiderate, sociopathic animals we humans really are, just work in that area of a store for a week... Two days would plant the seed, but a whole week would allow it to blossom into full flower.

So you’re mad poor people are stealing necessities like underwear? You’d prefer they were ripping off jewelry? Interesting...
