Apple Pay users – have you used Apple Cash... - RAMd®d - 02-26-2020

...at a retail POS terminal?

I've got a fair amount on my Apple Cash card from Apple Pay use.

I've never attached a bank about to it or my Apple Card because my inner Boomer balks at G-S or any entity but me debiting my account.

The Apple Cash thing is supposed to be linked to Discovery Debit, Green Dot, or something, but I don't recall any communication from them.

I'm not sure why, but I think I'd like the idea of using it instead of my Apple Card for local retail purchases.

Safeway want some kind of tracking info when one uses Apple Pay, if you what the loyalty discounts. As another Forumite explained to me, don't use the Safeway card and there's no phone number required.

Of course it may be there's no difference in using the Apple Cash card for Apple Pay over my regular debit or credit card.

So, specifically, any Apple Payer use their Apple Cash at a retail store's Apple Pay terminal?

All of the time. Any time I notice that my Apple Cash is building up. I've used it at Safeway, a local coffeeshop, McD's, a parking terminal, and more.

Excellent, thank you.

Did you do anything else to set the Apple Cash up?

I followed the prompt in the 'Phone and that was all.

Until I heard something in a podcast or online, I didn't know that Discover was involved in anyway.

It's not Discover.

It's Green Dot Bank, a debit card company.

And whenever I see my cash balance exceed about $40 bucks, I use it at the grocery store.

...Safeway doesn't have any weird requirements. The cashier scans my Safeway card barcode to start, and then I wave my Apple Watch over the terminal to pay.

Well, there's some confusion on my part as this:

https://appleinsider.com/articles/17/12/05/apple-pay-cash-leverages-discover-network-for-new-virtual-debit-card

and Network Discover Debit under my Apple Cash 'Card Details' do in fact say 'Discover Debit'. There may be some minutiae I'm missing, but it's mostly irrelevant.

...Safeway doesn't have any weird requirements.

When Safeway first started accepting Apple Pay, I'd swipe my Safeway club card, then use Apple Pay (tied to my debit card) on my Watch, then enter my PIN.

This went on until the Apple Card was issued. I switched my Primary Apple Pay card from debit to the Apple card. I'd swipe my Safeway club card, then use Apple Pay (tied to my Apple Card) on my Watch. PIN no longer required.

That was fine for a few months. Then Safeway started requiring a phone number when using Apple Pay. The above drill no longer worked.

If I don't use the Club card, Apple Pay can be used without giving a phone number.

If I use any physical card in the terminal, a phone number isn't required.

Using Apple Pay requires me to enter a phone number.

At CVS, I use the little keychain barcode tag, wave my watch.

No phone number.

Done.

Apple Pay Cash isn't a Discover card service per se. You may have linked your Discover card to Apple Pay in this fashion:
https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/digital-wallets/applepayredeem/

So, maybe you're getting Discover cash back, redeemable thru Apple Pay Cash?

I'm in the whole Apple-Pay-ecosystem: An Apple Card from Goldman Sachs tied to Apple Pay as my primary card and with cash-back bonuses going into my Apple Pay Cash account with Green Dot Bank.

Seems that what you've got is a Discover card as your primary card in Apple Pay, maybe with your Discover cash-back bonuses accessible through the Apple Pay slot in the apple Wallet app. It's a little different.

I'm sure that most of us are using the Green Dot Bank arrangement.

Imagine that.

I have no clue as to whether or not I have a Discover card.

But I do have a clue, and no Discover Card.

I did not link my card to any bank other than G-S.

I too am in the whole Apple Pay, Apple Card, Goldman-Sachs ecosystem.

My primary card for Apple Pay is the Apple Card.

You may be familiar with it. If not, it looks a lot like

IF anybody linked me to the Discover Debit network, it was Apple.

From the link I provided:

In order to bring the Apple Pay Cash debit card to life, Apple has utilized credit card provider Discover, whose Discover Network debit services power the virtual tap-to-pay card for money transfers and in-store purchases.

From Business Insider:

It'a obvious Discover has their hand in this even if one doesn't have a Discover card.

And it's all actually moot since my mention was merely Discover/Green Dot and not Discover, and of no significance beyond that.

Equally obvious, you can't explain Discover's part in this, beyond offering that 'most of us' having Green Dot displayed under of Apple Cash Payment Card > Card Details, a difference without distinction at this point.

Here's a reddit discussion that clears things up.
