Best RAM Configuration for Mac Pro 5,1 Dually? - Buzz - 02-27-2020 What's the best way to divvy up RAM between the two banks in a 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 DP? Glut of RAM available is: 5 X 8GB 3 X 4GB 3 X 2GB Obviously, highest count is to use all the 8's & 4's, but what is optimal structure? 8+8+8+8/8+4+4+4, or... 8+8+8+4/8+8+4+4, or... 8+8+4+8/8+8+4+4, or something else? To have totally matching banks, we'd lose an 8 and a 4, and gain two 2's... 8+8+4+2/8+8+4+2, which is 44GB instead of 52GB, but then everything matches between the banks. So what's the real best practice? (while I have to keep futzing w/ the other (single proc) tower's phantom RAM slot issues) Thanks. == Re: Best RAM Configuration for Mac Pro 5,1 Dually? - AllGold - 02-27-2020 You get a slight boost in speed from populating 3 slots instead of 4 on each CPU, although I doubt the difference is really noticeable. But based on that, I would say dump all the 4GB and 2GB sticks and get one more 8GB for 3 X 8GB times two. Re: Best RAM Configuration for Mac Pro 5,1 Dually? - MrNoBody - 02-27-2020 As long as 16GB sticks aren't involved, the 52GB should be OK if all of them are 1333MHz DDR3 PC3-10600 ECC Memory. I'm running 32GB (4x8GB), two sticks marked Micron & two marked H-P; all server pulls but with the same ratings. It seems to say, use 8+8+8+8/8+4+4+4, to start with, then let the Memory Slot Utility possibly recommend a better configuration. Does that then mean there really isn't a best practice that can be gleaned from real world usage? I was hoping the MRF smarties would know. It's a bit tougher to diddle w/ RAM in the dually, than in the singlet, hence the hope. == |
