system software update not progressing - Mr Downtown - 02-28-2020
My desktop Mac has been bugging me all week about installing some stupid system update, so this morning I finally took a half-hour to Quit out of all the running applications and let it go ahead.
And . . . it's been stuck with the little progress bar at about 3% for the last 2.5 hours. Black screen with Apple logo, the progress bar, and "Installing Software Update" showing.
What do I do now?

Typical. Ask again tomorrow morning if it hasn’t completed by then.

I've stopped running it from the Preference Pane/App Store; I usually start into Internet Recovery Mode and run from there.

I'd wonder when my last Time Machine backup completed.... this stuff always makes me nervous!

I've forced shut down in this situation and it has always come out ok, not that I recommend you do that especially if you aren't backed up... but you are of course... right? When I've done it the computer just started normally - the update was actually completed. But I've NEVER done this on my own computer - just ones that I prep for selling. If the software exploded, there would be no loss.
