Freeman J. Dyson, a mathematical prodigy who left his mark on subatomic physics before turning to messier subjects like Earth’s environmental future and the morality of war, died on Friday at a hospital near Princeton, N.J. He was 96.

And yes... best known to SF readers as the inventor of the "Dyson Sphere", a thought experiment on how to get the most living space by capturing the entire energy of a star by enclosing it.

I think his book Weapons and Hope is a classic, although perhaps a little dated at this point. He is particularly good at describing the effect of Russian history on its policy.
