WMV conversion? - graylocks - 12-10-2006

my library is starting e-audiobooks download service next month. they say it is playable on any portable or desktop that support Windows Media Player 9. i'm assuming they are in wmv files that my current version of WMP can play but but i'm wondering if there is an app out there that might convert wmv files to MP3s so i can listen on my palm PDA.

They are probably .wma files, and I think iTunes may be able to convert them into .mp3 or something else. Unless they are encrypted .wma files, then you may be SOL.

Had the same problem. Had to spend $15 for the PC software SoundTaxi, download to a PC, run SoundTaxi on the PC, to get MP3 files playable elsewhere.

SoundTaxi, like other conversion programs, is slow. I run it overnight and all works OK.

Re: WMV conversion? - what4 - 12-10-2006

P.S. If you use SoundTaxi, do NOT download to the Mac first. The library download licenses the item to a particular computer. Download to the computer with SoundTaxi on it.

You can run SoundTaxi on Virtual PC, but god is it slow, slow, slow.

sounds like i'll be borrowing some space on my son's pc. i don't know if the files are encrypted - if they are, will soundtaxi still work?

never mind - just visited the site and it will bypass any protection. i'm planning to use this legally but i'm a bit bothered it exists.

1, Audio content would be a WM*A* file, not a WM*V* file.

2. VLC and MPlayer, just updated today, should be able to play these.

3. VLC can do conversions, but really you could use WireTap or Audio Hijack to do the conversion (in real time) to preserve them in a more universal format.

4. Your library must hate its customer base. Using WMP9 guarantees that most of their clientele will not be able to play the content, since 9 requires a pretty recent computer and the most recent version of Windows. They may want to rethink this, or open up a second hotline for complaints.

I use EasyWMA to convert Windows Media files to mp3. It costs $10 now but if you can find a version that is a little older, 2.1 or so it is free. Also there is another program called Switch that does the same thing.

thanks for the file name correction, folks.

chas_m, i probably wouldn't want to play these audiobooks on my computer. i do have Wiretap Pro but i tend to get books that are 8+ hours longs. that's an awful lot of real time...
