Tiger on a G3 iBook? - MysteryGuest - 12-11-2006

Thinking about installing Tiger on an elderly 500 MHZ iBook with a 10 gig hard drive that I just took in.

Is this a good idea? Will use mostly for e-mail, word processing and surfing. Currently it's running Panther, but I no longer have Panther disks and I'd like to have a fresh install.

Go for it. I have G3 iMacs in my sphere of influence running 10.4.something.

Big thing isn't drive space or MHz, but RAM. How much RAM do you have?

He's probably only good for 640MB (maximum).

I say DON'T do it. Tiger (up through 10.4.3 or 10.4.4) was slower than 10.3.9 on my G3 600MHz iBook with 640MB of RAM.

It ran ok on my G3 iMac, 500MHz (as Zoidberg indicates) upgraded with a 7200RPM HD, but it suffered on the iBook with only a 4200RPM drive.

Wife's iBook 500MHz dual USB runs 10.4.8 w/no problem. Slow but perfectly acceptable for emailing, surfing, word processing, spreadsheeting, et al. Config is 10GB HD and 640MB RAM. HD size not an issue since she accesses my PB via wireless LAN to retrieve pics etc. go for it.

Run it on my 400mhz Pismo and it's great. I wanted Dashboard.

I have 10.3 running on a 300mhz Walstreet. It is fine for email and web, as long as you don't try and do both at the same time Wink

10.4 is a lot more graphic intensive. It will run much slower than 10.3 on a slow machine with a low end video card.

Thanks, guys, maybe I'll reconsider. Not at home, but I seem to remember the RAM was maxed out when I took care of this baby for my friend.

IMHO I would stick with Panther. I've had the opportunity to run Panther and Tiger on dual USB 500mhz icebooks. The Panther iBook seemed quite a bit zippier than the Tiger 'book. Both had the same specs. I do think the limited video and hard drive (speed) limitations of the icebook are a significant factor in Tiger. Good Luck! Dave
