"But perhaps the most serious issue with Social Security, and the one that gets the least attention, is the persistent decline in births per woman over the past decade."

If only there were a source of young families willing to come into the country and join our work force. That's a real head scratcher, eh?

The idea that a country that can spend trillions on it's military and infuse billions to support it's business structure cannot afford to care for it's older citizens is ludicrous but then a country that was once a world leader could put a buffoon in charge is ludicrous as well.

^this.

Undocumented folks are already subsidizing Social Security and will get nothing out of it. Honestly, I think if we gave them a path to citizenship if (just for example) they paid a reasonable surcharge over the usual FICA (that was directed to SS) we could solve two problems at once.

Also remove the cap and let everyone pay FICA on all earnings not just $140,000.

Lots of studies and calculations have been done. It doesn't take much to nudge the system so that it is fiscally sound for the next 30 years or 50 years or whatever goal you want to gain at the current moment. When 40 years rolls around, they can fix it again.

Re: Birth Rate insufficient to support social security - RgrF - 05-17-2020

Fixing it would imply a desire to have it fixed. While widely popular, there has always been a rock solid right-wing base that opposes and works to undermine any and all social programs.

They have enough financial support to insure they not'll fade away and will be with us for the foreseeable future all the while looking for ways to subvert or damage any government program that does not benefit their own narrow interests.
