Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - space-time - 05-30-2020 My "new" house had an antenna in the attic and I have an even better antenna that I plan to install, but first I need to move in and haul a TV there. My Current TiVo Roamio form 2015 (I think) still works great, has lifetime service, 3 tuners (plenty for us) and has never skipped a beat. I upgraded the hard drive from 500 G to 4T. now TiVO has another good sale, $400 off, so what would be $750 can be had for $350 https://www.tivo.com/shop.Deals Would it make sense to upgrade and sell the old model? I don't see what I could gain, unless there was 4K OTA broadcast. I am under the impression that OTA is still 1080, and 4K is only streaming, but I could be wrong. Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - deckeda - 05-30-2020 720p or 1080i for HDTV broadcasts, depending on the network or local station. Yes, streaming can give you more pixels but that won't matter if the data compression winds up being so tight (and/or bandwidth limited) that the only things the extra pixels show is noise. Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - S. Pupp - 05-30-2020 ATSC 3.0 is coming, with 4k OTA TV. Silicondust has a tuner on Kickstarter capable of receiving 4k. Some markets are doing testing sometime this year. As for when and if it goes mainstream...?Unknown. Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - rich in distress - 05-30-2020 It seems I prefer to watch 1080 rather than 4K, due to my vision... it’s weird. Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - Filliam H. Muffman - 05-30-2020 There are 40 major TV markets in the US that are supposed to get 4K OTA before the end of the year. There might be a half dozen stations nation wide playing with broadcasts, but it will likely be very intermittent until 2021 assuming you have one of the 2020 TVs with ATSC 3.0. It seems to be labeled "Next Gen TV." Stations that switch to Next Gen TV will still have to keep broadcasting ATSC 1.0 for five years. ![]() COMING SOON TO A TV STATION NEAR YOU: Top 40 TV Markets Launching ATSC 3.0 www.atsc.org/news/coming-soon-to-a-tv-station-near-you-top-40-tv-markets-launching-atsc-3-0/ Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - Carm - 05-30-2020 You are paying for newer/maybe better hardware. Upgrade while the old hardware holds more of its value. For me, I’d be paying $120 for Plex to do my OTA recording with HD Homerun Duo. Now, I just watch local news with the tuner. Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - MrNoBody - 05-30-2020 The other big question, will there be any OTA 4K worth viewing? Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - Bill in NC - 05-30-2020 Don't upgrade until Tivo releases something that can decode ATSC 3.0...the current Bolt can't. ATSC 3.0 is going to be delayed...COVID has killed station revenues & many stations here have had to pay to replace their antennas during the repack (moving to new frequencies) that finishes end of next month. Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - space-time - 05-30-2020 Don't upgrade until Tivo releases something that can decode ATSC 3.0...the current Bolt can't. Thanks, that makes it very clear that I don't want to upgrade at this time. In fact I need to check to see which stations I can get there first with existing antenna or my new antenna. Re: Is there any OTA 4k Broadcast? - deckeda - 05-30-2020 ... Stations that switch to Next Gen TV will still have to keep broadcasting ATSC 1.0 for five years. So, those of us who don’t record (feed the TV from some box) will be replacing incomparable televisions in a few years? |
