Anyone have a mom and pop email server you like? - Dennis S - 08-21-2020

There are some things I don't like about gmail. I have a great small one but they started charging for it. I want something simple and intuitive with a memorable name that doesn't sound dated.

What's your budget?

Free. I don't know if "server" is the right word.

You want a free email service provider.

Try googling “free email”. I think hotmail is still out there.

Setup your own at someplace like Hostgator? The Hatchling Plan is about $30 a year and you can have a website and as many email accounts as you want. Even if you don't really use the website, having control of your own system is okay. It looks like they will also register a domain for you for the first year.

I don't want to start any pissing matches on web hosts. I've been with Hostgator for about 13 years now and rarely have any issues. I would say their 99.9% uptime guarantee is accurate.

The only downside to this is that you are committing to do that on a long term basis if you want any permanence to your email address. If you want permanent, there's really not a substitute for Gmail at this time. I'm not really sure what it is about Gmail you don't like. If it's the "they know everything argument"...they will know everything no matter what you do.

I've done similar to Markintosh, and second his take. Getting a clearly identifiable domain for myself & SO, we started out with private mail service and quickly moved to a hosting package. We currently run about 7 email addys, which you can quickly create and then trash for one-offs that avoid spam and other specific needs. We've also created a couple of subdomains when needed. Not free, about 40-50 a year after the promo year, but I think it's a necessary utility in the 21st century.
