Worth considering any 3rd party USB-C chargers? Or just get an Apple original? - clay - 09-07-2020

Looking for a second USB-c charger. I have an Apple 61w charger that came with my 2020 13" MBP. Would like to have another either for my bag or desk so I don't have to always unplug and take the charger with me.

I see that Anker has a 60w for about half the price ($35) of the Apple one.

Worth going third party? Or should I just stick with Apple?

I'd go 3rd party. I haven't had any trouble with my 3rd party chargers.

I'd grab this one as its a bit more powerful for only a couple dollars more - https://www.amazon.com/MacBook-AUKEY-Upgraded-Technology-Delivery/dp/B086X37GVS

I've used plenty of 3rd party chargers, all have worked well.

I now like the Anker models where you get USB-C and USB-A ports.

Here's one I like - 49.5W, refurb, $25

GA-N chargers are clearly the future - smaller and seem less hot. Keep an eye out for those options too.

Last one I bought was second hand off of eBay. Works great, 1/3 price.

Saw an Anker on Kinja deals today for 25 IIRC.

Can’t go wrong with Anker.

I've seen some blown Thunderbolt ports which may have been from using 3rd party chargers/cables. (In the 15-inch and 16-inch, those may be repairable without a full logic board swap. Potentially big bucks on a 13-inch.)

I suspect that they're sparking when the Mac is plugged into the cable/adapter before the adapter is plugged into wall-power. Not a lot of evidence behind this. Might be something else altogether, perhaps manufacturing defects by Apple.

Just to be on the safe side, I suggest plugging in the adapter to wall-power before plugging the power-cord into the Mac.
