Share music between iTunes 6 & 7? - mikebw - 12-21-2006
So I'm looking for a hack or some way to allow you to play music between two networked computers, one running iTunes 6 the other iTunes 7.
Any ideas?

iTunes 7 should be able to play the network shared music from the iTunes 6 computer, but iTunes 6 cannot play shared music from the iTunes 7 computer.
I stumbled across what might be a solution for your situation, it's the FireFly media server software from RokuLabs, which is their temporary solution to the problem that their SoundBridge product cannot play iTunes 7 network shared music. It will share an iTunes 7 library in the protocol used by iTunes 6. I'm not sure if it will work with purchased/DRM muisic but it does work from my AAC encoded music that was ripped from my CD collection.

Ahh, very good. I'm actually using this in a separate network with their SoundBridge M500 and iTunes 7 with much success. I'll give it a shot, assuming Firefly will run on OS X 10.2.8 (another complication I am dealing with).

Looks like FireFly requires 10.3.9 or later, but Apple's iTunes 7 download page lists 10.3.9 as a requirement for iTunes 7.0.2, so I'm wondering how your iTunes 7 computer is running 10.2.8.

Ahh, it's not. Dealing with 2 separate issues here.
My 10.2.8 computer is running iTunes 6, and I want to be able to play music from that on an iTunes 7 computer. 10.2.8 is a real problem now it would seem. Who has had success running 10.3 on a Beige G3? I know about Xpostfacto, but it seems like a hassle.
The Firefly app is running on a G5 at a different location alongside iTunes 7, with 10.4.

I'm pretty sure that iTunes 7 can play the shared music from an iTunes 6 computer, it's the other way around that doesn't work, which is why an iTunes 7 computer would need to run FireFly to allow an iTunes 6 comptuer to play it's shared music.
