They will surpass us eventually. We just crossed another milestone at 200,000 dead.

Reporting systems from both countries are unreliable. The US suppresses data while India picks a number and submits a guess.

India is sequencing to find COVID. They literally do 1500 tests at a time. They just announced a super cheap CRISPR version made by Tata.

They actually have a better feel for exposure rates in their big cities than most in the US.

They also have a rural country side with almost a billion people and have no idea what's going on there.

Don't be so sure.

A coworker's inlaws and his wife's extended family contracted it in their small village in India. They were quarantined. Food was brought and left outside their home. The (elderly) father became quite ill and was taken to hospital, where he sadly died.

india DOES have a rural healthcare access problem. But their bureaucracy is reasonably effective.

We'd better step things up a notch, otherwise we'll lose our position.
We're number one! Go USA!

The only good news is that the variant that is spreading fastest does seem to have lower mortality rates.

Though, there is an open question in academic hospitals why our mortality rates are dropping since March. It's not just better ICU care, or the protection of the risky. Something else is happening, and to our overall benefit of COVID patients.
