Weighted blankets? - pdq - 12-12-2020
Casting about for a present for the wife. Anybody have one (and like it?) How heavy should they be? (Don’t need an overly hot one). Anything else I should look for/know about them?

I got one from Costco last year. It is a 15lb one. It is a little too heavy for my tastes. Maybe for a bigger person, but for me, I think I would rather have it a little lighter maybe 10-12lb.

Flocked with glass beads are the best. Not the ones that need a duvet. Not the ones filled with sand or anything else.
They're awesome. With my weighted blanket, I get to sleep at least 20m faster than without and the beads hold onto heat so if I have to get up in the middle of the night the bed will still be warm when I return to it.
You're supposed to spec it at something close to 10% of your weight.
Beware that they run a little small. A blanket promoted as queen-size is probably really full-size.

I dunno how it works. I've heard a few theories. I don't think they're applicable to me. It just works.
And I sleep "hot," too. The weighted blanket gets very warm and stays warm. Took some getting used to, but it never reaches that point where it's oppressively hot.
One other consideration: It's a solo blanket. It tends to slide towards one side of the bed or the other and it's heavy enough that shifting it back can take a big and disruptive effort. And if there's any... "activity," the weight and the insulative qualities are not favorable. Take it off the bed on any night where there's a chance of hanky panky.

I adore mine. I have 2 15lb ones. One is not baffled so it’s basically a bag of beads. It needs a lot of help to stay kind of distributed. The other is baffled and stays even. I should use 10lbs or so but I like the 30lbs. There’s some calming biochemical thing from deep pressure. It just feels good to me... comforting. I sleep poorly anyway, but I think this does help somewhat. It IS a big bummer when one slides off the bed. I can’t get it back on from my spot on the bed.

I've been sleeping with a "weighted blanket" most of my life. I've always had to have something moderately heavy on my legs to sleep, even during warm weather. I sleep hot too, but still need the weight. My brother told me years ago he is the same way. It's a pain when you're visiting someone in the summer and they don't have any blankets in their guest rooms. Hotels are notorious for not having any kind of blanket in the room during warm weather. I've been known to use a pillow over my legs if I have to.
I currently use a fairly heavy wool blanket between my sheet and top cover to get the weight I need. It's only on my side of the bed as the wife thinks I'm crazy. Well, not really, but she is fine sleeping with just a sheet.
