OK OK, Even I have to admi, BGnR should get a gold star for today.I've been looking @ used iPods from Pawn Shops, to resell, and this may help avoid buying junk!!!! The main thing I try to do is find iPods with bad batteries, and I found a place that has replacement batteries (http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm?Parent=1225&Title=iPod%20Batteries&Template=1 ) so if I can pick up a dead ipod for $25 and $25 for the battery instant $50 profet!!!!

Also of use is the "target disk mode" of the iPod. It can sometimes clear up some iPod/iTunes voodoo.

Re: How To Boot iPod Into Diagnostic/Hardware Test Mode - what4 - 12-29-2006

The video's instructions were:

1. Reset iPod the usual way: hold down the center button and the top of the scroll wheel (Menu button).

During that reset, or after it is finished (hard to tell which from the video),

2. Keep holding down the center button and move top thumb to left (back) button for a few seconds.

I've tried this and variations, and it does not work on my 3G color iPod.

Anybody found the path to diagnostics on that model?

What4, here you go: http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/104944/104949#msg-104949

Linky from that link.

That video is for 4Generation and later iPods.

Thanks, Carm, but I still can't get a diagnostic mode, even after trying all the recommended combinations. I have a pre-video photo iPod with the click wheel. It works, so I'm not worried. I just thought diagnostic mode would be nice to have.
