Foreign hackers breach US Treasury Department using Microsoft Office 365 flaws

The U.S. Treasury Department and Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration have been breached by hackers working for a foreign government, possibly Russia, stealing unknown data in an embarrassing security issue for the U.S. government.

A breach was alleged to have taken place, affecting both the U.S. Treasury Department and the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration, an agency that works on policy relating to the Internet and telecommunications. While details of the attack are largely unknown, it is thought to be serious enough to have forced a meeting of the National Security Council on Saturday.

A very curious bit to me:

Multiple sources within the Department of Defense not authorized to speak on behalf of the government have confirmed the attack to AppleInsider. They all declined comment on how much data has been taken, or on which federal agencies the attack targeted.

It just doesn't seem likely to me (or even possible?) that AI would have 'multiple sources' within the Treasury Department.

It looks like the Russians owned the email servers for the Treasury department for at least 5 months and could intercept/read/delay/alter anything they wanted for our International Terrorism task forces, the IRS and the US Mint. Apparently, there are some parts of Homeland Security that still use Treasury email, so it's appropriate to assume that the Secret Service, Customs, ATF and other Homeland email is compromised as well.

Less info about the Commerce Department. One breach opens the door, so we should probably assume that the Census Office (hah!) has been compromised as well as the PTO, NOAA, and pretty much everything involved in business-development, weights and measures.

It'd be nice if we had someone in a lead cybersecurity position in the US government.
