USB-C to USA-A or whatever - Mike Johnson - 12-24-2020 Well, my M1 MBP finally made it off the ship at Long Beach, and I have my LG 5K monitor too. Of course I have USB speakers, a microphone, a webcam, a scanner, another scanner, a MIDI gadget, a Griffin PowerMate, a Wacom tablet, and sometimes I prefer using a wired mouse. So the MBP notoriously has only two Thunderbolt 3 ports. But, that's fine for me, I just need peripherals when it's used a desktop machine. So it's hooked up to the monitor. And the monitor has 3 USB-C ports. I need at least three -- preferably more -- USB ports. I have a USB C to USB adapter and it works fine for my microphone. Can I just get a normal old USB hub, hook it up to the monitor with the USB C to USB adapter? It shouldn't need to be a powered hub, right? Thanks! PS The MBP, it's great but there's some wonkiness & I can't wait for native software Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - jdc - 12-24-2020 Yep... there are hundreds of multi port USB C hubs to choose from. anker, aukey are both good brands. SHoudlnt need powered if everything that goes into has power. Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - Ken Sp. - 12-24-2020 I'm not sure if there is the bandwidth to run a monitor through a USB hub. BTW-The M1 supports the new USB 4. You will need a good dongle or a Dock. OWC has an assortment, as does Apple and Amazon. If you need both ports-you will need a dock/dongle that supports power pass through. The M1 MBP power adapter is 61 Watts, Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - C(-)ris - 12-24-2020 You cannot run a monitor through a hub. Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - OWC Larry - 12-24-2020 this be a great best option imho... ![]() https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-thunderbolt-hub Note that you are still limited to a single external display though... that's a limitation of the M1 MBp, not the device... Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - Gareth - 12-24-2020 For clarity's sake: MBP <--- TB3 cable w/ Power Delivery --> LG 5k Monitor with 3 extra USB-C Ports (assumes there's a typo in the original post on the monitor model) The monitor should be providing power to the MBP, so you have an extra TB/USB-C port on the MBP itself. And you have 3 USB-C ports on the LG monitor (total of 4 available ports). But, for simple setup, it makes the most sense to connect everything to the LG monitor for 1 cable connect/disconnect (just the TB3 cable). So, as jdc say, if all the USB devices are lower power or self powered, you could get any old USB 3.0 hub with USB-A connectors and connect it to one of the LG's USB-C ports with your adapter. But, if you're buying a new hub anyway... I would just buy one that goes directly from USB-C to USB-A, such as: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Aluminum-Adapter-MacBook-Chromebook/dp/B07DFYQXY7/ https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Adapter-MacBook-Chromebook-Pixelbook/dp/B0772TXG3H/ You also have the option of getting a "dock" style hub, that has other ports, like SD/Micro-SD reader, ethernet, HDMI all built-in, but that might all just be extra stuff you don't need. Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - OWC Larry - 12-24-2020 in re-reading the initial post.... LG 5K straight to the M1 MacBook Pro - will fully power your laptop no problem. The LG has a webcam, mic, and speakers built in - but are you using other, separates for all or some of those functions? 3 x USB C port Hub on the LG can easily be adapted to USB-A ports with the adapter you have - any decent USB C to A adapter like: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TCCADPU3/ Yes - can use your Hub via an adapter - either off the computer's other C port or should be fine off one of the LG 5K ports as well. That's a lot of USB devices there. Use a good hub for sure. Mike Johnson wrote: Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - Mike Johnson - 12-24-2020 Yeah, the monitor powers the laptop, which is sweet. I want to hook my desk stuff up for work I do at my desk, which includes video conferencing. I prefer my own webcam, and my own mic, and my own speakers to what the LG monitor has. I need a high quality AV setup at least until we get past zoom & Webex meetings. Plus I already had the gear. Of course, they're not always in use, and when they are it's not like I'm running both my scanners too, but it would be nice if I didn't have to plug and unplug. I see some 7 and 8 port USB3 hubs for pretty cheap. I am not crazy about the limitation to one monitor. But I've been using a 4,1 Mac Pro, then switched between that and my son's cast off iMac 12,1. They were showing their age and I need something that can handle 250,000 line spreadsheets and massive multilayer GIS files. And I need a laptop. But the monitor, oh it was hard. I was using a dell 30" + a 27" dual monitor setup and this limited real estate isn't ideal. Pretty, though. When I have everything ready to set up I'll do a dual monitor thing with the laptop, rather than mirroring. That will help. Thanks, Larry! I did place an order earlier today for some other stuff. I don't need it for Christmas, tell your elves it can wait. And Larry, thank you for your years of support for the Mac community, and your years of support for this community. I'm one of the old DM crowd and who knew we'd still be hanging around together nearly 25 years on? But here we are, thanks to you. Merry Christmas. Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - Mike Johnson - 12-24-2020 Thanks! You have the set up right. I want to hook the peripherals up to the monitor so when I need to go in to work I can just unhook one cable and take my laptop. I definitely don't need ethernet or sd card readers. I can't use an HDMI port. I think I'm going to shoot for 8 usb-a ports, figure out what is most cost effective. I really don't need a dock. After buying the laptop, and the monitor, and Adobe and Filemaker for the new machine, I am sick of spending money. Re: USB-C to USA-A or whatever - sekker - 12-24-2020 You can daisy chain another external monitor using display link tech and that 5K LG monitor. I use it that way every day. Currently connecting a reclaimed 30” HP. |
