The confederate flag in the Capitol - lost in space - 01-08-2021 Regarding the confederate flag having been carried through the Capitol building during the insurrection in DC, I have a problem with the significance given that gesture. The press and others have taken it to mean it represents a turning point against our efforts over the last 50 years to bury racism. But as far as I can tell, its appearance at the insurrection was because some single racist halfwit thought it would be a cool thing to do, not as a representation of the insurrection as a whole. Am I wrong here? Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - Acer - 01-08-2021 I would not know because this insurrection has no platform to refer to, other than stop the steal of something that was not stolen. Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - davester - 01-08-2021 There were many more than that one confederate flag at the event, though not all of them were the "stars and bars". I'm not sure how many were carried inside, but it was more than that one that keeps showing up on the news. Not only that, but the FBI has identified a bunch of white supremacist leaders as part of the invading mob. Make no mistake, this was in large part a white supremacist attack on the government. Sure, there were some perhaps non-racist misinformed sheep in that group but being a moron unaware of what's really going on is no excuse for participating is such an event. Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - pdq - 01-08-2021 Part of a violent mob trashing the US Capitol while waving (among other flags) a flag of rebellion against the United States. Yeah, sorry. I don't see the need to be an apologist for these folks. Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - rgG - 01-08-2021 What was that green and white flag with the four Ks on it all about? I kept seeing it and assumed it was something to do with the klan, but wasn't sure. Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - davester - 01-08-2021 Oh yeah, don't forget about the neo-nazi flags, Q-anon flags, nooses/gallows and similar paraphernalia. Note that the yahoos ripped down the stars and stripes, threw it to the ground and replaced it with a trump flag. Yeah, real patriots! Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - Sarcany - 01-08-2021 A guide to the symbols and signs on display at the Capitol insurrection Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - JoeH - 01-08-2021 davester wrote: Were any of them the "stars and bars"? The flag everyone waves around is based on the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, and even then is not exact as that one was square. It is not the "stars and bars" flag of the CSA, and only ever was a battle flag. The later non-"stars and bars" flags of the CSA incorporated it as a canton, not the full flag. Good illustrations of the various "real" confederate flags are part of this Wikipedia article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America. Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - sekker - 01-09-2021 That photo with this flag really bothered my wife. Re: The confederate flag in the Capitol - rgG - 01-09-2021 The flag, which is known as the flag of “Kekistan,” represents a fictional country that has “existed” for several years, but has increasingly been used by white supremacy groups as a symbol of hatred and racism, Jaffrey-Rindge school district Superintendent Reuben D. Duncan said in a letter sent to parents Friday. This is the flag I was talking about. https://www.sentinelsource.com/news/local/flag-associated-with-racism-displayed-at-conant-pep-rally/article_011506f5-bfef-5a3d-b868-0cac99cd0290.html |
