OT: BMW help - Carnos Jax - 12-31-2006

I came across what could possibly be a good deal. It's a red (w/grey leather interior) '98 318ti with 104K miles (automatic). The seller is asking for $6.9K in the ad. The exterior appears to be a 9/10, the interior 8.5/10 (I've checked the car out in person).

Off the top of your heads, can any of y'all recommend a good BMW mechanic in the Dallas area (preferably southwest Dallas, around Cedar Hill).

Also, if someone has a Carfax registration active, I'd appreciate it if you would run the VIN:

I own a 328i convertible, and I would not agree that the ti is that good of a deal. My car cost me $12k a year ago, but with only 50,000 miles on it and in pristine condition. That is a fairly representative price. The ti is MUCH less of a car than the 328i, and the one you cite has an double the miles on it of mine. I would think $7,000 is about what it's worth. What's the blue book?

Re: OT: BMW help - Carnos Jax - 12-31-2006

Wow, thanks for the input Dave. I haven't checked Blue Book yet per say (I was just thinking off the top of my head). I'll check blue book on it for sure. Yeah, the 328 is a much better car in terms of performance. I've been keeping an eye out for a 328is as well ('97-'99).

I have a feeling this guy might let it go for anywhere between $4K-$6K (just a feeling though, I haven't done this kind of thing that much, so I could be wildly wrong).

P. S. - KBB says approximately $4500 trade-in and $6500 private party.

No recommendation but you might try the car talk guys http://www.cartalk.com/

They have The Mechanics File where you can put in a zip code and find a mechanic
based on listener recommendations. I actually searched it for my own zip one time and
found a listing for my mechanic and I found the write ups on him were spot on.

Whoa! All right 'fil! Man, that's a great resource. I've found several listings in the area. Much thanks!

Well I see your spellin' has improved so maybe now you can work on your reading comprehension

Re: OT: BMW help - rexrzer - 12-31-2006

I am sorry, but that car is NOT a BMW!(td)

All the BMW's I've ever owned had 6-cylinders, and a stick shift, and you could truly call them "driver's cars", especially my 2 M-Cars, a 1988 M5 and its replacement, a 1991 M5.(tu) Even my 1996 528i was a great car, as was its replacement, a 1999 328i leather/Luxus 5-speed that I sold to my insurance agent when I decided it was time to slow down and get with the M-Benz program via a 230C Kompressor Sport 4-door.

First off, re this 318is, it's the old 1966-vintage 1.8L 4-cylinder redone with more modern porting and head work, fuel injection, and yet it has less SAE HP than the older vintage cars with the carburetor because of smog controls and lower compression. 2nd, it's an automatic, which makes it dog slow and impossible to have any fun with. 3rd, its miles kill any potential value it *might* have had, even if you could buy it for $4K or so, which is its ACV IMHO considering that a smart buyer would double the hit for high miles in a real-world deal.8-)

Why don't you find a nice 328IS with *low miles* and a 5-speed, and be a happy camper rather than flirt with such a lesser automobile? If you're serious about ever owning a BMW you won't settle for anything less than the above, that is if it's really a BMW that you're after.Wink

I guess it's just that I've gotten the impression that the 318ti has become legendary due to the reliability of it's motor.

I've been keeping an eye out for cars from all over the BMW (and others) spectrum. I'll admit, this particular one (though it appeals to me in a stylistic sense) draws me for it's reliability and cost.

I didn't realize the motor was that old, but perhaps that's why it's bullet proof.

I am concerned about the auto, but there's a second (occasional) driver in the equation that can't drive a manual (too long to explain).

So you like your 230C?
