Because of a high positivity rate among returning students.

Meanwhile, Harvard of the West, University of California, San Diego reports rates <1%.

It can be done; it takes a strong testing protocol and the will of students to follow some rules about masking up and avoiding large groups. However, UCSD's numbers didn't start out that way. The very first week of the quarter, (Jan. 4) 94 students tested positive… so MSU is just a little behind probably having just started their semester. But without testing and students who want to stay on campus - and not be quarantined in their dorms - MSU might be in for a tough semester.

Although the article doesn't mention numbers, there are about 40k students at UCSD (along with almost the same number of faculty/staff) - with a little less than 50% of students, faculty, and staff on campus right now.

UIUC in Champaign IL is full in-person since August. They had to lock everything down after 3 weeks because students who tested positive would still go out and party.

The President tried to demand the police enforce their orders. The police told him that there are no laws being broken and ended up dragging the President around to see for himself all of the parties on Greek row and in non U housing.

They then imposed strict ‘go back to Chicago’ rules for those breaking the policy, enforced politely by student leaders and a new zero tolerance policy by administration.

Students still get tested twice a week last I checked. And sewage from dorm rooms etc are also tested etc. This surveillance and testing protocol has now been offered to the nearby city residents.

It’s very hard to ve COVID positive and not be informed at UIUC.

You CAN make a safe zone bubble around COVID in the US. Takes leadership. The testing protocol is not very expensive in relation to other costs. UIUC gave their testing protocol away last June. There literally is no reason a top university with a life science research arm doesn’t follow except for lack of leadership.

Waiting to see how my former employer UMass does this Spring semester, they started students moving in just over a week ago. They are aiming for 60% occupancy of the dorms, about 9,000 students to live on campus and mostly single occupancy. They are set up to d testing, students are required to get tested twice a week if they are on campus. So far a number of reports of parties and other get-togethers of more than the recommended size. First day of classes is Monday.

The private universities have been doing it well for four months, so it should provide all the public universities an excellent guidebook of how to do it properly. Not easy or fun, but it can be done.

I should have said "around here," as that is what I meant. Friends' kids have just recently returned to UMass Amherst.

Well, in Boston I recall a few students from one school were quite publicly returned home for violating policies, with no tuition refund. That may have helped get the point across to some students who otherwise would not have paid attention.

As for UMass Amherst, that is where I used to work. I have been following some of the social media connected to there as I still have friends and acquaintances working there and having to do their best to avoid infection. There are reports of many parties and gatherings, and students not following masking, etc. I fully expect a big spike in cases there over the next couple weeks.

As it was, with a reduced student population off campus - estimated at about 3500, and only about 900 living on campus, UMass students for much of the Fall were about 25% of all cases in the entire county where UMass Amherst is located. The total county population is about 160,000.

Are you saying that hundreds of students tested positive or that the cumulative testing of students accounted for 25% of positives? That's a huge difference that isn't clear from your post.
