pros and cons of Blockbuster total access vs netflix? - SteveJobs - 01-02-2007

Just saw an ad for the first time for the blockbuster total access. I've never done netflix or this one. Any tips/pros or cons?

I have had Netflix since the end of 2000. Although there have been periods of a few weeks where sending or receiving was buggered by our friends at the post office overall it has been a goddamned cinematic blessing.

I hate going to the movies but with 70 movies in my queue and two out at a time I'm kept busy. Plus they have lots of obscure stuff, foreign movies, and unrated flicks. It is rare that I want something that's available on DVD but Netflix doesn't have it.

So that's a strong thumbs up for Netflix.

I have done BB online for about 2 years. Similar system

I get between 6 and 9 movies a week from the on-line program. I am in Seattle, and they have a distro center here, one 35 miles south, and a 3rd in Portland, Oregon. In addition, now you can drop off your online movies in the store, and get them checked back in, and take home that many movies from in-store, And the next day BB online sends out some new movies, and it starts all over again. And BB online gives you one free in-store rental coupon a month.

With BB online, the best way to do it is to get the obscure stuff, or the series/sets on-line, and trade them in in-store for the popular and new release stuff. new release stuff online can often debut as short or long wait, and take a few weeks before you can get a copy. In store they will have a few dozen most likely. (I have a big store nearby)

My local BB store is about 10 blocks away, and is on the way to and from work.

No contest the way it is right now. BB all the way.

If there is a major snafu with BB online, you can call or e-mail support, and usually they will take care of it quickly, and either offer a bunch of in-store movie coupons or send a few extra movies from your queue to make up for it.

And when i did have BB about 18 months ago and ropeed them, about 2 months later they begged me to come back and gave me a month for free, and a bunch of coupons as an incentive. (I dropped them as we were going on vacation, and right after that I was traveling for work, so I didn't need any movies for about 6 weeks anyway) When I started it back up, they reactivated my account, and my queue was still there.

FYI, I work from home, and frequently have a lot of rendering time on the computers, so i can easily watch a movie or two a day during the down time.

Do either services offer Blu-ray movies?

I've had both services, and BlockBuster is much better, at least in my case.

After getting off to a good start, Netflix began to "throttle" my account—delay receipt of movies and the sending of movies from my queue.

BlockBuster has been much better and I generally get movies within 1-2 days. With the "Total Access" program, BB is a far better deal for me.

Blockbuster is starting to offer BluRay and maybe HD? Blu Ray for sure.

Do they still have beta tapes? Smile

they were transferred over to flip books, and the audio is now on microcassette tapes.

Blockbuster will be as good as Netflix 'til Netflix folds, then they'll start ramming you in the bunghole 'til you bleed. Enjoy.

well, yeah. That's to be expected.
