Has Biden indicated he will fix the Flint water problem? - Dennis S - 02-04-2021

It seems like it would be a win for Biden, the party, and most of all, the residents.

No.

Signs are not good for that.

He largely ignored the subject when campaigning in Michigan and appointed Gina McCarthy to National Climate Advisor when she has a poor history in respect of the Flint-response.

Michael Regan, nominee for EPA Administrator does not seem to have taken a strong position on the matter.

It's as much a trust issue as it is a technical issue. The government has so fully undermined Flint residents' trust in public servants that even though most of the lead lines have been replaced, and the water generally tests clean, people are afraid to use it.

Long Politico article that shows how a city and really ruin people's lives and make it hard to come back.

It is a state issue, and more specifically a municipal issue not a federal issue.

How do you mean?

Drinking water quality is absolutely a federal issue, as is protecting children from lead poisoning. The EPA has been centrally involved in this for decades.

From what I've read, there has been a great deal of progress regarding Flint's water situation. I read one story that the water is acceptable to drink and that 85 percent of the pipes have been replaced.

I'm sure the residents are skeptical but no way there's not been work done. It may be more or less fashionable to claim the water is still as bad as its ever been.

I'm done researching so I dont know what the latest is other than all the finger pointing.

For enforcement, testing, and to identify problems and order fixes? Yup, all federal. You need the watchdog to keep them honest. As far as FIXING the problem, that is on the municipality or the state to fund and implement. Their town, their water, their self caused mess, they pay to fix it. If they can't, then the federal government needs to sue the state for payment or to force them to fix it. Either way, Federal dollars shouldn't bail out Michigan tax payers. They voted these people in that were making the decisions.

With respect, that's a simplistic reading of the situation. The EPA has a responsibility to ensure safe drinking water for Americans. They often, through MOUs and other agreements, devolve that responsibility to state environmental agencies. Nonetheless, they are ultimately responsible, and in the case of Flint the EPA was clearly negligent in that responsibility.

The governor in MI directly caused this catastrophe, by ordering that the water supply be changed from the Detroit system (drawn from the Great Lakes water system) to the Flint River, which was clearly an unsafe choice. The EPA had a mandate to prevent that kind of mistake from happening, and they didn't.

Using federal dollars to fix this problem, in conjunction with state monies, is entirely appropriate. It smacks of racism to blame the residents of Flint for something that started with the governor and was done without their consent or input.

It's basically fixed. I don't know why people won't recognize this. There are updates all the time. What needs fixing, is the Flint people's distrust of the water system. That's going to take some time. All of these other concerns are moot for the most part. There's still some work to do, but they're doing it. It's not like they didn't know "how" to fix it.
