Yet one more USPS story - DP - 02-12-2021
My nephew in Maryland-I'm in the metro Detroit area-received their Christmas gift in the mail today! I sent a check to cover the kids and a gift card for him and his wife and I was starting to think some POS felt the "thickness" of the envelope and decided to see what was inside.
I sent it a week before Christmas...

I wonder if any of the high-speed processing equipment was removed from their processing centers, or what their staffing was like.
They have suffered a huge backlog, along with the occasional mis-delivery or temporarily loss.

Even if the sorters were online, they'd have huge backlogs.
It used to be that postal workers were encouraged to work overtime to ensure that mail went through on time. Now, they not only are not allowed to work overtime, but hours of operation have been scaled back and there are fewer trucks moving the mail. Combine that with the staffing and logistical problems of the pandemic, and letting mail stack up to prioritize ballots in November, and budget-cutbacks across the board reducing new hires and you have a big f-ing mess.

I read that overtime was curtailed just before the election, but that it was reinstated for because of the anticipated workload.
They never got the machines back.
I also read that the USPS were down 40,000 employees nationwide due to COVID, and that's why I wondered about staffing.

That is not the outcome I was seeing in SE MI from mid-Nov through Dec.. We were seeing USPS "jeeps" delivering several times a day on our streets, even on Sundays. I assume they are the "last mile" folks in some UPS/FedEx shipments. I also know a lot of it was due to greater numbers doing online shopping. I also know there was a big backup in deliveries due to instructions from authorities.
I have not been in contact with the single mailman I know to ask why this was happening.
