Old article, but interesting use of $4000

“Nissan supports products and initiatives like this that drive EV adoption in North America and around the globe,” said spokesman Jeff Wandell to Green Car Reports. The company couldn’t yet comment on how it might handle such aftermarket products like the Quasar as it relates to vehicle warranties.

The unit will be able to provide an output power of up to 7.4 kw—either to the car or back to a home or grid setup—and it’s configurable from 6 amps to 32 amps. It’s a fully connected device, with wifi, ethernet, Bluetooth, and a cellular connection, and it had an RFID transceiver, facial recognition, and gesture recognition.

Or steal Peter B's prius

Step 1: Choose the Plug-Out Kit appropriate for your needs. ConVerdant offers three kits that include the Island (a power inverter) and input cable with different power ratings: 2 kva, 3 kva, and 5 kva.

As a general rule, the 2 kva kit is appropriate for running non-electric heating and one major appliance, such as a refrigerator. The 3 kva kit can handle one major appliance, non-electric heating or a forced air system, and one smaller appliance, such as a coffee maker. The 5 kva kit is capable of running two to three major appliances along with a 240v pump or air handler.

And hope you can recharge it while the power is back on! I saw a Tesla on the road, and I wondered if he was looking for a charging station with power?

I hope you have a cutoff switch to prevent your EV from powering the grid!

I have an inverter attached to my Volt. It's about the same as a small generator, but it doesn't need to run the motor constantly because of the battery. They have kits for the Prius as well as many other models.

If I remember correctly, CHAdeMO supports Car to Grid. You could power your home with it. It was baked into the design of the charging standard. CCS2 also was supposed to include it, but I haven't seen reports of anyone actually using that feature. Nissan Leaf is the only production CHAdeMO vehicle in the US as far as I know.

I thought about installing one in our Volt but we seldom lose power for more than an hour or two and that happens about once in ten years. The price was just a bit too high. I forgot that it might come in handy when we vacationed and they lose power in a state in as bad a shape as Texas has become. Three days and counting... But not having water is almost as bad. Fortunately we have enough Purell to use where needed on our bodies (thanks, pRICE).

Last power outage here (~8 hours) the neighbors used heavy-duty jumper cables to connect a large (noticed it was also pure sine-wave) inverter to their vehicle's battery & left the vehicle running.

Then ran extension cords from the inverter through the kitchen window, for the fridge, presumably.

I'm considering the same, but into the basement for the furnace & possibly the chest freezer.
