Maybe now the in-laws will believe in Covid - Ombligo - 04-03-2021
In an earlier thread, I mentioned that my in-laws believed covid to be a hoax and refused to take any precautions.
We just got word tonight that my Daughter-in-law's grandfather died alone in the local hospital from it. While I feel for the family, it makes me mad that this was completely avoidable with very little effort.

That’s the thing about stuff like conspiracies and “alternate truths.” Coming around to rational understanding tends to remain separate from personal impact. You might say it’s core to the circumstance.
I had to distance myself from inlaws in the last year after my mother in law claimed sickness is brought upon by the victim. Like, inherently. She lost her first husband to cancer. I lost my mom to cancer. She essentially said both caused it due to some personal evil. I said, “you’re an idiot, you’ve insulted their memory, and I’m done” or words to that effect.

We just lost a friend of a friend to Covid yesterday -- he was 42 years old at the time of death -- and it continues to enrage me that we could have lowered the death toll enormously had we acted intelligently as a country. This guy and his family were being careful, but when there are lots of people not being careful, some of us are victimized.

I am sorry for those who try to protect themselves and their families and they fall victims of the virus and those who do not believe this is real.

How awful ... sorry for your loss.
And it makes the point also that one can be super-careful and still get this disease... and that our behavior does not occur in a vacuum.
