Perhaps you meant to say McCarthy is the one trying to retool history. From the NYT story:

Maybe, but cops tend to be politically conservative, and maybe this one thought he could talk some sense into another conservative. Actually, while McCarthy's a full on tool, he did promise to broach the topic personally with said knuckleheads - so it wasn't a full-blown denial. More of a brush-off…
It's clear to anyone watching what happened on 1/6 in DC that this was not just a small bit of civil disobedience, and the deniers and apologists need to be called out more forcefully. Following the money on this is probably just too scary for most of the asshats in Congress to fathom.
