Looking for standalone password manager app (so long 1Password) - tuqqer - 07-07-2021
I have new employees who each need an integrated password manager (yes, we are well aware of Mac's built-in Keychain, we're just looking for something else).
1PassWord, as of this month, no longer will offer new standalone licenses, and I only would like to find and use stand alone paid software.
I know this has been discussed before here, but it's a fast moving target these days, so if any MacResourcer is using a password management app that they love that isn't subscription, please pass them along. Many thanks, and adios 1PW.

The overwhelming majority of people (97% in fact) choose to subscribe to our new service
A not-unexpected outcome when you make the option to purchase a perpetual license nearly impossible to find on your web site.

Yeah, they became a funny organization, with weird, shifty communications like this, and I dislike that. I have no problem with anyone's profit model, but don't lie. And no, until there's no more standalone apps anywhere, I just prefer non-sub apps that I pay for once, and then leave it alone. No "over the next 15 years, you'll pay us $800 per user." Just not for me.

Because they hid the option to upgrade to v6 or v7 with a standalone license. If you didn't know the trick, you couldn't do it, so most customers assumed that it was subscription-only and subscribed.
Engineering the outcome and then playing it up like there was a choice is deceitful. People are righteously upset at this dumb game they've been playing to promote subscriptions.

Yeah, I'm going to need to replace 1PW when I lose 1PW 7 to an OS upgrade one of these days. It's not just the subscription that bothers me (tho that's a big factor). It's putting a copy of my passwords, notes, etc. and the master password on their servers in the cloud. I don't trust it.
LastPass got hit back in 2015 and again in 2016, and while they allege (correctly) that the data that was stolen from their servers was encrypted with tough encryption that couldn't easily be cracked at the time, I think it's a ticking time-bomb just waiting for the tools to mature enough to crack the master-passwords, and meanwhile their browser plugins have been repeatedly compromised by white-hats.
1Password's plugins have had their share of vulnerabilities exposed in the past, too, which wasn't such a big deal when the passwords were only stored in a locally encrypted keychain, but is scary when your whole life is stored in the cloud.

I DO NOT use it, but my previous employer used to install this on our windows machines. Since I had 1Password I never bothered to use it much, except to play with it a few times.
They are various iOS flavors, I never used those.

Exactly this. One of the most valuable features of 1Password has always been that *I* control where the password vault was stored.

Exactly this. One of the most valuable features of 1Password has always been that *I* control where the password vault was stored.
I get that. But what's the alternative? Everyone in my home has multiple "devices". Computers, phones, tablets, etc. The alternative is installing a separate app on all of them, and then keeping them all somehow synced w/o sharing on some sort of cloud platform.

Does the Subscription version force you to store the vault on their servers? or can you still do a local vault?
