I don't get why you can't get a discount if you don't want "Free Delivery" - C(-)ris - 11-29-2021

New range is getting delivered today, hopefully... I guess Home Depot contracts to a third party for delivery. Given that, I don't understand why they wouldn't discount the price if I didn't take the free delivery. I was given the option to pick up at the store and they would load in my truck, or to have it dropped off in my kitchen.

With the price of labor, vehicles, and fuel there is absolutely no way that it isn't costing HD at least $50 to $100 to get that range into my house my from the store on the other side of town. Plus, they are responsible for any damage that happens getting it in the house and if they mess something up it is going back to the store and they are going to have to repeat the process again.

Maybe it is marketing and since they advertise "Free Delivery" they can't discount if you don't take it. I dunno, just doesn't make sense to me as I'd rather have another $50 or $100 off the price and also rather not have random people in my house.

Are you sure that they actually stock it at the store? Lots of appliances get delivered from a large warehouse somewhere, so if you wanted to pick it up at the store, they might have to first deliver it to the store.

Possibly, but must be cheaper to drop off 30 appliances at one store versus dropping off 30 appliances at 30 different houses. The last mile is the expensive part in product delivery and the larger the item the more expensive the last mile is.

Partly what GGD mentioned, then need more info. It might be that they have stats that show customers taking delivery at the store have more returns because they tried to fit the range in the back of their Sentra.

Found out not long ago HD keeps little or zero stock on hand in-store. Usually just the cheapest model of any one thing. W/D, fridge, etc.

Im sure they don't want to do store pickup with such items, cause it makes way more work for the in-store employees. Time, labor, doesn't fit in my Miata, liability, plus storage space.

Have you called and spoke to a manager about this? maybe they can do it if you asked them.

It’s partly that they can’t advertise something is free if a cheaper option without it exists. And so with no cheaper option available to the customer it’s rarely an issue. You’re still paying for delivery, although not as much as you think because they’re contracting with people who aren’t charging HD on a per-item basis or if they are, HD is compensating them enough to make it worth the effort. And then just rolling that cost back into revenue offsets elsewhere.

Where it becomes super annoying (for me) is when a seller advertises free shipping but the product is advertised elsewhere for less, and shipping brings price parity up TO the “free shipping” vendor. Amazon’s Prime tier is grossly guilty of this. eBay sellers who similarly include shipping where they total just so happens to be similar to other non-free-shipping vendors do the same thing.

Was delivered with no issues. Took them all of 5 minutes, very efficient. Dropped it down in the kitchen right in front of the opening. 2 people in a rented Enterprise box truck with lift gate.

Since I declined to purchase a $40 new power cord and elected to transfer the one from the old range to the new range they would not install it. You have to purchase new cables for install, guessing a liability thing as well as a way to get some more money selling a new cable. Mine was in perfectly good shape and only 10 years old so I reused it.
