Heading to San Diego for a Week. Stuff to do with a teen? - chopper - 01-31-2022

The usual museums and stuff have been scheduled. Going to try and rent a wetsuit so he can try snorkeling or perhaps surfing. Suggestions welcome.

For snorkeling, I recommend starting at La Jolla Shores and heading South towards the Seven Caves (but don't actually enter them, unless conditions are calm - if you're in there when a wave comes in, it'll be like being inside a jagged washing machine) - try to go at low tide to increase the chances of seeing aquatic denizens.

Getting a kayak from one of the nearby rental shops would make the trek a bit easier - or you can walk along the base of the cliffs towards the caves.

Unfortunately, you're probably a bit late to see the Leopard Sharks - but maybe there'll be some stragglers.

Enjoy the water and storefronts at Ocean Beach for a day - wetsuit not necessarily required. Wrap up at sunset with appetizers and beverages at the Wonderland Ocean Pub.

Did you already block out some time for hiking around Torrey Pines?
If not - do so - by far one of the more scenic places to see; here's the Reserve's website, and pdfs of trail maps, guides are available on the first link above (under the "Brochures" tab on the web page).

I used to enjoy hanging out with and watching the hang gliders from the cliffs above Blacks Beach. I have no idea if this area is still open to the public... a beautiful place to picnic.

San Diego Zoo? It's on my list after watching them on NatGeoWild.
