Advice on selling a car - rgG - 04-19-2022

I finally have all the paperwork I need to execute my husband's will/estate.
I want to sell his car. Neither I nor my daughter need it.
I have gotten online quotes from Carvana, CarGurus, and some others and I also got an offer from the dealer where he bought the car.
The car is a 2014 Audi A4. It has roughly 69,000 miles and is in very good shape, except it will probably need a new battery for whoever buys it.
Carvana has the highest offer, by a lot. They are offering roughly $16,700. The dealer and all the other quotes I got are around $11,500-$12,750 (from the dealer). Seems like a no brainer, sell to Carvana, but there is a hitch.
Carvana's site says the car cannot be sold to them unless the title is in my name. I cannot just sign it as the executor of his estate, which means I would have to have the car retitled, taking 2-3 weeks, and also pay 1/2% of the value to get it retitled. I don’t know how much exactly that would be, but let’s say $100 or less.
The other option is to try for a private sale, which I was trying to avoid, but maybe I should reconsider.
I am wondering why the Carvana offer is so much higher than 3-4 other offers and if there is some catch or some reason the deal wouldn’t happen.

What do you guys do when you need to sell a car?

there is no catch with Carvana. They are mentioned frequently in my Volt group as always seeming to be offering the most these days. They want as much inventory as possible and are more than willing to outbid others to make sure they get your car. The transaction reported have been no hassle no brainers.

if you don’t want the wait Carmax took my late brothers Leaf with just my paperwork as Personal Representative which is what you are in GA when there’s no will.

In most states there is no tax/fee/penalty for intra-family transfers.

If you're a AAA or other auto club member, try there, you may be able to get that type of transfer done quickly, and be on your way w/ Carvana.
Good luck.

I talked to the tax/tag office today, and they told me about the fee and the time frame. Sad

I may call Carvana just to confirm that I would have to get it retitled, but it did say that on the website. Carmax was a lot lower than Carvana. I would probably go with the dealer, if Carvana didn’t work out.

I kinda got lost in the middle, but if the retitling costs $100 (?) + time to potentially get an additional $4000... seems like a financially smart option.

Definitely call Carvana, I doubt the rules cover every situation and perhaps yours is the exception. It does not hurt to ask.

A private sale is not that hard, and in this market could be quick as well. See what your model is selling for, price it a bit lower, and have the final acceptance price in mind. If the price is offered, accept it.

I’ve retitled a few cars - going to kids or grandkids. AAA codes them as a 1$ sale. You play the sales tax and under $100 in fees. Takes an hour.

Haha, Carvana has so many title issues, I'm surprised they care! (Although the title issues are actually on the buyer's end, with Carvana failing to provide them in a timely manner).

But, for the additional amount, and "hassle" free selling (other than the title issue), it certainly seems worth it to go through the re-title. You should check how long their quote it for, because it might expire before you get the new title. Although it doesn't seem like the market is going to change dramatically in a month. There's a possibility you might even get more if you get new quotes in a month (but it could also be less).

There may not be an estate tax but there may be a fee for the title transfer. There is in PA - I know first hand.
