…..and requires dongle to charge….

New iPad Only Supports First-Gen Apple Pencil, Requires Adapter to Charge

....The new, 10th-generation iPad only supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, meaning that it requires an adapter to charge separately via a wired connection since the device has moved to USB-C.

The new iPad has no magnetic wireless charger on the side to connect to the second-generation Apple Pencil? Only the first-generation Apple Pencil is supported by the device, which normally needs to be plugged into a Lightning port to charge. The iPad now has a USB-C port, meaning that the Apple Pencil can no longer be charged directly via the iPad.

Entry-level iPad users who want to use the Apple Pencil will need to charge the accessory using a USB-C cable and a separate adapter. The smallprint on Apple's 10th-generation iPad press release states:

Apple Pencil (1st generation) is compatible with the new iPad. A new USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is required for pairing and charging and is included in the box with a new version of Apple Pencil (1st generation) for $99 (US).

For existing owners of Apple Pencil (1st generation), the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter is sold separately for $9 (US).

The first-generation Apple Pencil came with a female to female Lightning adapter allowing it to be charged separately, but now Apple is offering a new variant of the accessory called the "USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter" that enables Apple Pencil users to charge. The adapter is available separately at a price of $9 for existing Apple Pencil users, while new Apple Pencil units include the adapter in the box.

I like this comment on the article:

WE LOVE TO BE GREEN.
PLEASE BUY THIS NEW ADAPTER

Seriously, they updated the ATV Siri remote to USB-C, but couldn't bother to create a USB-C pencil? I guess that would have required stocking 2 versions of the pencil though, since people might still want lightning versions for older iPads.

The whole Gen 1 Pencil doesn't seem like a well thought out product and they should have just moved on and let the new iPad use the Gen 2 pencil.

I agree!

2nd thought, yea, they should have made a USB-C "Gen 1" pencil and then included a USB-C to lighting adapter instead. At least then, the adapter could be used to charge lightning iPads with USB cables too!

Although I've always thought having the male connector on the pencil and having it stick out of the iPad to charge was incredibly stupid. So, perhaps the "USB-C" pencil should have a female port, and then a short USB-C male to lighting male cable. Since it looks like you have to use a USB-C to USB-C cable anyway with the USB-C pencil adapter.

did they release a new iPad today, and it does not support the Apple Pencil Gen 2? Did I read that right? WTF?

I think I charged my pencil once by letting it stick out of the side of the iPad. It looked like an accident waiting to happen that would wreck the lightning connector on the iPad. I now use the double female extension piece that (I think...) came with the pencil and just charge it with the same cable that I use to charge the iPad. I leave that extension piece on the pencil all the time.

I think Gadje nailed it. What The Heck? Forward Apple, not back! They must assume nobody uses the pencil with the less expensive iPad. I’ve been waiting for an OLED screen to update. Still waiting.

The AppleTV announcement seems like an update nobody wanted. I wish Siri could search my own library.
