Florida fascism - full speed ahead - Ombligo - 02-28-2023

A bill has been introduced into the state legislature that would outlaw the Democratic Party.

The so-called “Ultimate Cancel Act,” aims to ban any political party that once included slavery in their platforms from running in the state, including the Florida Democratic Party. The measure would switch Democratic voters to no-party voters or give them the option of choosing another party. If passed it would take effect on July 1st of this year.

Normally I would laugh at the idiocy involved here, but given that the Republicans have supermajorities in both chambers, the state supreme court is all Republican appointed, and DeSantis, this bill could actually pass.

And only 90 years after the same thing took place in Germany when all political parties other than the National Socialists were abolished.

I once saw an interesting chart of party evolution in time, and IIRC, somehow Republicans and Democrats switched places on that chart. It was in a museum, I will see if I can find one online.

OK here it is. The flow seems so complicated, I wonder if they can actually outlaw themselves.

Open in New Tab for full size. It's huge.

Ingoglia: “I recommend other states to do the same!”

He means just Republican controlled states. But if they are going to do it then I think California Democrats should do the same thing to the Republican Party there - using a different ridiculous pretext, of course.

The tides will change again. California used to be a reliably conservative state. Not so today, particularly in the large urban areas. Enclaves still exist - in the Central Valley and Northern California - and even that number shrinks further every time someone in one of those areas is able to finally locate a U-Haul and hightail it for Texas or Florida.

Times change, and so do politics.

Ingoglia… One of Mr645’s “New Yorkers”; a college dropout who relocated to Florida in 1996.

How come the Party of Abolishing Slavery is also the Party of Save the Confederate Statues?

Because of that 'Race Traitor' LBJ!!!

Yeah, more than once I’ve had some conservative point out that Lincoln was a Republican.

No! Really?

:RollingEyesSmiley5:

When LBJ (and folks like Hubert Humphrey, who was calling for an end to racist policies in the late 40’s, IIRC) came along, the positions of the parties started to change. Then the Dixiecrats (and Wallace) split off, and then with Nixon’s “Southern strategy” and Reagan’s dog-whistles and “welfare queen” smears, the conversion was complete.

Now they’re just bat shit crazy, in addition to attracting votes by being racist and fascist. If I had any question as to my party identity when I was younger, they’ve made that decision for me clearly now.
