Does gun violence really matter? - Mr645 - 05-05-2023 Our government and media really has to stop pretending they care about gun violence. On May 3rd there were two mass shootings in America 1 in Atlanta where 5 people were shot, 1 died and another in Chicago, 5 people shot, but no one died. Everyone heard about the Atlanta shooting but once it was discovered a black man shot 5 women with a handgun, news quickly ended, it no longer appears on CNN top news where it would typically stay for a week. CNN is still running articles about the mass shooting in Serbia, but nothing about Atlanta. Still better than the complete lack of news coverage about the Chicago event. Leaders in Atlanta called for an AR-15 ban after the mass shooting, again deflecting from the real problem. The Atlanta killer BTW went to the same hospital a week prior saying he was having a mental breakdown and needed help, he was sent away, only to return a week later with a handgun...... Now I would guess the facility he went to (the woman who died was employed by the CDC) was 100% not the right place for mental health care but this still shows we need some sort of mental health care system. Compared to 2021 and 2022, we had fewer mass shootings in 1986, back when anyone could go and buy a fully automatic weapon. Did the assault weapons act of 1986 than banned military grade weapons and fully automatic weapons fix anything? Why would anyone think banning semi automatic rifles work? Re: Does gun violence really matter? - mattkime - 05-05-2023 If the media isn’t as I want, it means nobody cares and the topic isn’t important. Re: Does gun violence really matter? - Acer - 05-05-2023 I don't understand what the OP considers proper coverage of a mass shooting. When no new information is available, then the stories fade away. It's that way for every event. The incidents in Serbia stay in the news because those things don't normally happen in Serbia, hence "news". Here, yesterday's mass shooting is quickly pushed off the pages by today's mass shooting. Continued discussion moves off of the front page, but to the op-eds and talking head shows. As for calling for the banning of assault weapons after a handgun massacre, obviously the focus should be on banning handguns. But then the OP's head explodes when someone suggests that. They usually go to another facility after that for up to two weeks to completely sort out their medication. I don’t know anything about this shooter but a short stay in the hospital isn’t unusual. In the past our news consumption was far less. Limited to the daily newspaper or radio show or tv show the news did not dominate our day. Now we have unlimited news, we can click forever, seeing disaster after disaster until we are immune to feelings of sympathy or we become stuck in the muck of outrage or depression. We can use this forum in any way we want within the rules but I would suggest we can find more to do than simply list every shooting we can find across the world. Maybe we need a sticky called “todays shooting outrage” so those interested can post there. Re: Does gun violence really matter? - pdq - 05-07-2023 I don’t think ignoring the problem that America has (far more so than any of our peers) is going to solve it. I see a lot of outrage, but individuals other than Lemon Drop don't seem to personally be making any effort, based on self reporting. |
