Tony Bennett -96 - Black - 07-21-2023

On my short list of famous people I've met. Not many people remember that he went through a time in the late 70s where he couldn't get any bookings and his career was basically over. His son became his manager and decided to market him as retro-chic to college campuses, and it worked. It was during that time I was waiting backstage to go on (brass quintet thing) and looked over and saw him standing next to me waiting to go on a different stage. We had the perfect "what do you say to someone you've seen on TV all your life without making an idiot of yourself" exchange: "Hello." "Hello."

Couldn't have said it better, CJ.

He did have a hell of a run.

Just heard this.

Riposa in pace, signor Benedetto.

I think this is an opportunity to celebrate his life with a list of all our favorite Tony Bennet Songs/Performances.

Re: Tony Bennett -96 - Ombligo - 07-21-2023

Great voice, listening to him always made me feel like I was in a nightclub - even if I was driving down the interstate at high noon.

Re: Tony Bennett -96 - Gilbert - 07-21-2023

Growing up in Las Vegas, he was always a mainstay on the Strip, but never saw him perform til a few years ago when he came to perform at the Encore. My wife and I went and he put on a great show. His voice was still incredible.

Re: Tony Bennett -96 - N-OS X-tasy! - 07-21-2023

One of my best friends from my time at UCSB was a guy from Beverly Hills. The summer following my first year there we hung out together a lot.

One day we were having lunch with our girlfriends at a small cafe in BH when Mr. Bennett walked in. He was alone and sat at a table in the corner. He was dressed to the nines and oozed class and sophistication. I didn't meet him that day, but it was a treat just to be in the same room with him. Too bad they didn't make him sing for his lunch...

A good run, thank you very much Mister Bennett. Epitome of a class act…

He'd sing about how you inspired him to go from rags to riches.
