Serious evacuation of the Senate just now - hal - 08-02-2023

Coming over twitter now - the Senate building is evacuated for fear of an active shooter - no witness accounts for a shooter yet. I've seen vids of people being led out of the building hands raised.

U.S. Capitol Police searching Senate office buildings after unconfirmed report of active shooter

WASHINGTON — U.S. Capitol Police have locked down and evacuated the Russell Senate Office Building after receiving reports of a possible active shooter, two law enforcement officials told NBC News.

The reports have not yet been substantiated and Capitol Police officers are still searching the area.

U.S. Capitol Police tweeted on Wednesday just before 3 p.m. ET that their officers were searching in and around a Senate office building in response to "a concerning 911 call."

"Please stay away from the area as we are still investigating. We will continue to communicate with the public here," the agency tweeted.

In a follow-up post on Twitter, Capitol Police said, “If you are inside the Senate Buildings, everyone inside should be sheltering in place as the report was for a possible active shooter. It should be noted that we do not have any confirmed reports of gunshots."

At the moment, some are characterizing the threat as a “bad call.” But no definitive statement yet.

"Capitol Police officers came into one Senate office building carrying long guns and evacuated everyone on the ground floor, according to a witness."

Huh. Why long guns? A certain poster here assures us that there is no functional difference between these and handguns.

I don't understand Capitol Police's fixation on assault rifles.

I imagine that the Cap Police do not want to be caught unprepared ever again.

CNN —

The Senate went into lockdown Wednesday afternoon as US Capitol Police investigated reports of an active shooter in the Russell office building, putting Capitol Hill on edge more than two years after the January 6, 2021, attack.

But after some staff fled from the building following a concerning phone call and police instructed others on the Senate side of the Capitol to shelter in their offices with their doors locked, law enforcement authorities found no evidence of an active shooter, according to multiple sources.

US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger told reporters it “may have been a bogus call,” and that there was no confirmation of an active shooter after more than 200 police officers went door-to-door to make sure everything was fine.

“So far, nothing. … Nobody has heard shots” and “no victims,” he added. All three Senate office buildings have been cleared of any threats.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department says there is “no evidence of anyone injured” and at the moment, they are “unable to substantiate” the call.

Sort of surprising that they don't have shot detection tech like NYC and other cities.

A fair assessment.
