Soft contact lenses and water? - Greg the dogsitter - 02-13-2007 I'm taking a shot at wearing soft contact lenses. Suppose I get something in my eye during the day. Is it okay to wash off a lens with tap water? Or should I carry a bottle of lens cleaner with me at all times? Thanks! Re: Soft contact lenses and water? - Don Kiyoti - 02-13-2007 That's actually a problem you're not going to have to worry about much. If you get something in your eye it's unlikely to get under the lens or stuck to the lens. I've worn soft lenses for years and very very seldom have to take one out for that reason. Tap water won't kill your lenses but it's also not sterile so avoid it if you can. I always cary around some rewetting drops. A few drops of that will usually wash away whatever the problem is. Re: Soft contact lenses and water? - Fritz - 02-13-2007 it's best to carry some saline with you always, but I never do. I have used water numerous times when desperate or forgetful. 30 years wearing them, no diseases yet. Re: Soft contact lenses and water? - MacMagus - 02-13-2007 A little bottle of rewetting drops is seldom a burden. I often keep one in the change pocket in my jeans. Re: Soft contact lenses and water? - Greg the dogsitter - 02-14-2007 Thanks, all! MacMagus: On it's own, it's not a burden. But there's the wallet, keys, phone, iPod, spare change, and now the Palm. The fewer things, the better. I can already tell you it's a pleasure not having to grab my glasses from my desk whenever I stand up. Re: Soft contact lenses and water? - Fritz - 02-14-2007 I wasn't gonna switch to Cing T&T, but that does it! Re: Soft contact lenses and water? - Baby Tats - 02-14-2007 With contacts only costing about $3 a piece for disposables, I just stash them around. One in my car, one in Mrs. Tats' car, one in my backpack, one in my desk- you get the point. It is easier for me since I have the same Rx in both eyes, but you can always just pick the stronger power if they are close. If a contact gets so bad that it is irritating my eye, I just prefer to pitch it and get a fresh one. There is no problem with rinsing a contact in tap water, but it will quickly deform due to the unique properties of the polymers used and might sting when you insert it back into your eye and will take a couple of seconds to soak up your tears and reform. Here's a tip to save a bunch of money. When you put your contacts in the case, fill it with multipurpose to disinfect and clean. Shake the case briskly after you seal it up. Then when you go to insert them in the morning, briskly shake the case again. This does an excellent job of cleaning the lens without having to rub. When you remove your lens from the case, rinse with regular saline which is about 1/5 of the cost of multipurpose. Also, Kirkland (Costco) brand multipurpose solution comes in the best bottles I have ever used. When you squeeze you get a nice, strong, pinpoint stream which is good for blasting off the crud. I can't stand that piddle that comes out of most saline bottles. Re: Soft contact lenses and water? - graylocks - 02-14-2007 in a pinch, spit works, too. probably not the best thing but i've been wearing contacts for almost 40 years and the occasional use of the only available fluid hasn't caused a problem.
